Artist: Robert Maguire Redux—More Covers
For our Covers of the Week #112, we’re focusing on the late commercial artist Robert Maguire, aka R. A. Maguire, and his artwork for category romances.
We’ve been relying on historical romances too much around here! So it’s time to give other romance genres some love.
Over his long career, Maguire illustrated almost 1,300 covers for such publishers as Pocket, Dell, Ace, Harper, Avon, Harlequin/Silhouette, Ballantine, Pyramid, Bantam, Lion, Berkley, Beacon, Monarch, and Signet and Kensington. He more or less produced artwork for every mainstream publishing house in New York, making his original cover art highly popular in the last half of the twentieth century.
Known for his pulp genre erotic illustrations of scantily clad women, Maguire’s romance cover art featured a distinctive sweetness without explicit sensuality. It’s rare to find a Maguire romance cover with partial nudity like one would with Robert McGinnis or Elaine Duillo!

Hi – I am Bob Maguire’s daughter and I have many sketches of these and many other romance illustrations he did. One, The English Rose, is actually a wrap around cover. Anyway, I am getting old and I want to sell as many pencil and color roughs as possible. Most are signed and in good to excellent condition. I hope to hear from you.
