Artist: Alan Ayers
The romance genre has changed a lot since the early days of bodice rippers and sweet nurse romances. One change, in particular, is the artwork. Most modern covers are digitally generated instead of being hand-painted or illustrated as they used to be.
A pioneer in digital art, artist Alan Ayers is the focus of our 129th Covers of the Week.
A native of Gainesville, Florida, Ayers would receive his bachelor’s in fine arts from Temple University in 1981. Soon after, he was hired to illustrate covers for Heavy Metal Magazine.
Ayers received traditional training, so naturally, he started painting in acrylic and oils.
Back in the 1990s, Ayers was known for creating the outside exterior covers for stepbacks or the increasingly popular “headless torso” covers of the time.
But then he turned to work in digital art with resounding success. He was a natural fit for the medium. Soon, Ayers catapulted to the top of his field as the most in-demand artist in the romance industry.
Ayers has collaborated with many publishers, including Penguin, Random House, Harper Collins, Grand Central, Little Brown, Kensington’s Zebra division, Hyperion/Disney, Berkley, St. Martin’s Press, Sourcebooks, and Harlequin. His beautiful art has graced the covers of books by Johanna Lindsey, Lisa Kleypas, Elizabeth Hoyt, Sarah Maclean, Julia Quinn, and Danielle Steele.
In addition, Alan Ayers has created covers for many genres, including historical fiction, mystery, thrillers, science fiction, fantasy, and more.
Ayers’ diverse oeuvre is indicative of his ability to adapt to his surroundings and evolve as an artist. His embrace of digital tools, such as tablets, allows him to create intricate and stunning covers in a modern, innovative way.
He lives in Lancaster, PA, with his wife, Jeanne, and their dog.
