I would say these choices are old-school, but they aren’t really retro or vintage. These are all of a similar cohort with many overlapping character archetypes.
Thanks, Jacqueline. Of all the many types of romance, vintage contemporary is my favorite!
I pick my leisure reading by the book rather than by the author. But the author who works best for me is the little-known Hettie Grimstead (1903-1986), and her pen name Marsha Manning. She knew what romance is all about. And conveyed it to the reader so well.
Under both names, she was pretty prolific. From the fifties to the eighties she produced 56 titles, that I know of. All were contemporary romances for the major British romance publishers.
Most were reprinted by other publishers, including those on our side of the pond. So it’s not hard to find her works on eBay, Amazon, and other used-book websites. Plus several are available for free borrowing at the Internet Archive, the online lending library.
I’m looking forward to finding out how other readers voted. And why!
