Hispanic Heritage Month (or Half Months)
It’s “Hispanic Heritage Month” (for a few more hours anyway), and we always like to use these opportunities to highlight relevant romance novels.
As an aside, it’s weird to me how “Hispanic Heritage Month” is really two weeks in one month and then two weeks in another, so I tend to forget when it is. It runs from September 15 to October 15, so the “month” is technically over.
It’s okay; as a Latina-American, I’m keeping it real by sticking to Hispanic Time. No, that’s not a joke, although it is funny. That’s how we refer to the fact that we typically show up late for events—because time-keeping is a social construct. (Sure, I could blame my chronic lateness on ADD/ADHD or me being a stoner flake, and both would also be true.)
What time is it now? 18 hundred hours? 6:00 pm? Evening? 90 minutes before sunset? It’s all relative.
These little “holidays” aren’t meant to be solemn events. They’re fun ways to share culture, hobbies, and history.
A Brief List of Historical Romances Featuring Heroines of Hispanic/Spanish/ Latin-American Heritage
Last year, we listed Hispanic/Latino-American heroes in romances. This time around, here’s a list of retro historical romances featuring heroines in America with Hispanic, Latin American, or Spanish heritage. These ladies are of Cuban-American, Puerto Rican, Tejano, Californio, Mexican-American, or Anglo-Spanish ancestry.
This is a brief list, as Hispanic heroines have been featured in many romances—yes, even in the old-school days. You can find more by viewing the tag page for latina-heroine.
