Theme: Regency Christmas
The holiday season is upon us, a time of joy and excitement. As we approach Christmas, let’s take a moment to appreciate the beauty of traditional Regency romances.
Regency Christmas covers perfectly represent the season’s sweet, classic, and romantic essence.
For many of us in the United States, Christmas begins the day after Thanksgiving and continues until December 25, 12:59 p.m.
For more traditional religious followers, Christmas begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day Advent. It lasts until February 2, 40 days after Christmas, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord or Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commonly called Candlemas.
Celebrating the Christmas Season During the Regency Era

The Regency Era had various Christmas traditions that celebrated community, generosity, and festivity. Here are a few noteworthy moments from the season:
Stir it up Sunday: The Sunday before Advent marks the unofficial start of the holiday season. In Regency England, this involved preparing Christmas puddings.
Advent: The festivities preceding Christmas begin on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and last until Christmas Eve. The term “advent” comes from the Latin word “adventus,” meaning “coming” or “arrival.”
St. Nicholas Day, December 6: Small gifts are exchanged in Northern Europe, especially for children.
St. Thomas Day, December 21: Elderly women sought gifts of food or money from neighbors on St. Thomas Day.
Christmas Eve, December 24: On the day before Christmas, homes were decorated with traditional greenery and kissing boughs.
Christmas Day, December 25: A traditional Regency Christmas Day started with church attendance. Of course, presents would be exchanged among family and friends. There would be a celebration with a feast featuring dishes like boar’s head and roast goose.
Boxing Day, December 26: Boxing Day started with the head of the household giving gifts to charity and servants. Fox hunting and theatrical performances were also popular activities on this day.
New Year’s Eve, December 31:In preparation for the new year, people followed various traditions, including the Scottish “first footing” for good luck.
New Year’s Day, January 1: The first day of the calendar year included unique customs for predicting and securing good fortune.
Twelfth Night, January 6: Also known as the Epiphany celebrations, it includes gift exchanges, revels, and balls, but excessive revelry led to its eventual outlawing by Queen Victoria.
