This week’s edition of Sweet Savage Flame’s Covers of the Week showcases four romance covers that feature Native American characters.

Theme: Native American Romances
Our Covers of the Week #124 showcases covers with Native American protagonists in recognition of November being Native American Heritage Month. This week, Americans also celebrate our national Thanksgiving holiday, a day devoted to family, gratitude, and reflection. In addition, it’s a time to remember the history of our nation and the contributions of Native Americans to our society.
Although many scholars and critics today consider Native American romances controversial, from the 1970s into the 2000s, they were a major subgenre of romance fiction. Similar to how fans enjoy the fantasy of falling in love with Scandinavian Vikings, Middle Eastern caliphs and sheiks, English lords, Scottish lairds, and Mediterranean billionaires, readers also appreciated passionate love stories with handsome warrior braves.
The male protagonists possessed skills such as scouting the plains, taming wild horses, and commanding respect from their tribes. Their female counterparts were equally strong, proud, and beautiful.
Our selection of these old-school covers is intended to celebrate the rich history and culture of American Indigenous people. Moreover, we hope they inspire an exploration of the past and welcome discourse on the evolving perceptions of the Native American romance subgenre.
The Covers
