The Book
One Husband Too Many is a 1996 Harlequin American romance novel by Jacqueline Diamond. It’s a humorous, fantastical romance about a married couple who divorce but magically find their way back to one another.
The Cover
The cover for One Husband Too Many looks a bit off, with the heroine posed as a seemingly shell-shocked bride marrying two Martina Navratilovas. Definitely a unique choice by the artist.
As for the story, this book is similar to one of those fluffy romantic comedies you’d watch on a Sunday afternoon while folding laundry. It’s fine, but you won’t really think about it after it’s over.
The Plot
Jana Edwards has grown tired of her marriage to Drake. He is never around and is always looking for the next big opportunity. As a result, she asks for a divorce from the man she once thought was the love of her life. Surprisingly, she handles the situation with grace and takes it in stride, not shedding a single tear over her broken marriage.
Doesn’t the author know that divorce is one of the most stressful things that can happen to a person, right up there with the death of a loved one, loss of employment, and moving?
Moving! (I know I cried when I moved last time. All that packing and unpacking is traumatic.)
Well, there’s no time for sentimentality here as Jana finds herself in the past. That’s all thanks to a magical necklace that enables her to have a second chance at romance and finally meet the true love of her life.
Who turns out to be…
Why, it’s the very man she married and then divorced! Drake!
Jana knows Drake from the future, but he has no memory of Jana. The pair navigate dangerous circumstances to stay alive and find love again.
One Husband Too Many seems to have been with Hollywood in mind. This book is filled with movie clichés, like:
There’s a stock character of the evil British villain named Sydney Q. Reddin.
Plus, a caricature of a Southern yokel in denim coveralls and a straw hat.
And then there’s the hero riding in on a horse so he can dramatically rescue the heroine from a blazing fire.
My Opinion
It’s a cute story filled with humor and danger. The protagonists’ journey of reconnecting and finding love again is a bit hard to swallow.
However, if you “check your brain at the door,” it provides an entertaining read for fans of rom-coms.
Heat Level
This is family-friendly entertainment, so expect nothing you wouldn’t let a 10-year-old read. Kisses and promises of more are about all you see here.
Final Analysis of One Husband Too Many
One Husband Too Many is not without its sweetness. And I am a big softy at heart, especially when it comes to second-chance romances. Plus, if you toss in a baby (not literally!), I’ll smile.
One Husband Too Many is a diverting way to pass the time.
I’ll give it that.
